NSW Leadership Academy: Excellence in Public Service
The NSW Leadership Academy promotes excellence in the NSW public sector by enhancing the skills and capabilities of existing and emerging leaders through a unique suite of development programs.
Incorporating best practice from public and private sectors around the world, each program targets the specific capabilities required to succeed at the next level of sector leadership, while providing bespoke support to maximise an individual’s professional development.
The Academy programs are designed to create a pipeline of future leaders for the sector at each key level of leadership.
How the Academy works
The Academy is run by the PSC and governed by the Secretaries Board.
Its programs are designed to create strength for the sector at each key level of leadership targeting high-potential leaders who are ready to transition to higher roles. Each program aims for skills and capabilities required at the next level of leadership, rather than developing those required to fulfil an individual’s current role.
- Leading the Sector
A six-month program is for current secretaries to refine and strengthen leadership skills as measured against the Secretary/CEO Leader Success Profile.
- Leading an Agency
A 12-month program for deputy secretaries (and equivalent Band 3 executives) to develop leadership capabilities required to lead an agency or cluster.
- Leading Executives
A 12-month program for directors and executive directors (Bands 1 and 2 and equivalent) ready to take on further leadership experience in higher level or more complex roles.
- Leading Managers
A six-month program for managers currently leading teams (Clerk Grade 11/12 and equivalent) to develop leadership capabilities required for higher level or more complex roles.
Leadership Academy Alumni Program
The Academy Alumni Program provides access to professional, intellectual and giving back activities to stay connected with those who have completed an Academy Leadership Program.
- Alumni Events featuring keynote speakers, expert panels, discussion and debate on contemporary issues in leadership and the public sector.
- Leadership Academy Online is a closed group online platform for conversations, thought leadership and shared learning.

Entry to all Leadership Academy programs (except the Leading the Sector program) is by nomination and selection in line with each Department’s internal processes.
The Academy programs work alongside Department and/or Agency leadership programs and the PSC’s Leadership Development Courses. They are highly structured but the individual offerings are bespoke and could include executive coaching, mentoring, executive education, secondments, exposure to international government practices and peer networking.
