Aboriginal workforce initiatives

We have a number of initiatives in place across the NSW public sector to support employment and career development opportunities for Aboriginal people*.

These initiatives not only help to support and develop Aboriginal people within the NSW public sector, they also help to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people within our wider community.

NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy

The NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2014-2017 sets out the key initiatives to be implemented across the NSW public sector as a whole and within Departments and agencies.

These sector-wide initiatives are being managed and promoted by the NSW Public Service Commission (PSC), in collaboration with Departments and individual agencies.

Aboriginal Career and Leadership Development Program

Our Aboriginal Career and Leadership Development Program has been specifically developed for Aboriginal NSW public sector employees who aspire to become leaders. It provides participants with the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and activities aimed at building their leadership capabilities.

The program is an important initiative of the NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2014-2017. It also supports the NSW Premier’s commitment to doubling the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in senior leadership roles in the NSW public sector in the next 10 years.

Aboriginal Employment and Development Program

The PSC is introducing a whole of government Aboriginal Employment and Development Program to increase the number of capable Aboriginal people entering the NSW public sector and contribute to a long term approach to increasing Aboriginal staff representation.

The overarching aim is to provide a rewarding structured employment and development program designed to attract and retain Aboriginal people who have a desire for public service and are inspired by values aligned with those of the public sector.

A key component of the proposed program is the incorporation of a recognised qualification to support the opportunity for career progression, building capability and delivering quality public services to the NSW community.

The program is currently in development stage, with the pilot program expected to commence in January 2017.

Facilitating Aboriginal Staff Network and Development

Facilitating Aboriginal staff networks is a key initiative of the NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2014 - 2017.

The PSC is honouring its commitment to support the establishment and operation of regional Aboriginal staff networks and is continuing to host events for NSW public sector Aboriginal employees across the state.

Aboriginal Cultural Competency

Improving Aboriginal Cultural Competency in the Workplace is aninitiative of the NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy. It is important that NSW public sector departments and agencies develop and maintain workplaces that understand, respect and celebrate Aboriginal cultures, accommodate and bridge cultural differences as well as ensure they have workplaces that attract, retain, support and develop Aboriginal people.

A review of various approaches to Aboriginal Cultural Competency across the Sector will commence in mid-2016.

Aboriginal Workforce Development Community of Practice

Established under the auspice of the NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2014 – 2017, the Aboriginal Workforce Development Community of Practice provides a forum for Sector consultation on the operationalisation of the NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2014-2017.  It does this by sharing best practice methods to improve employment and career development outcomes for Aboriginal people in the NSW public sector.

Meeting quarterly, membership of this group is limited to NSW public sector HR professionals, Aboriginal employment specialists and other managers, where relevant to their role in the NSW public sector.

Cross-Sector Aboriginal Employment Advisory Committee

The Aboriginal Employment Advisory Committee is a consultative group comprised of Aboriginal employees who provide an Aboriginal perspective to the PSC on the initiatives within the NSW Public Sector Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2014-2017, and implementation challenges and issues.

The Committee comprises up to 15 Aboriginal public sector staff from across the NSW Government.

Representatives are in roles that are involved in Aboriginal employment, recruitment, career development and/or strategic policy. Members are drawn from each Department and represent the views or position of their Department/ agency. Meeting quarterly, the Committee is Chaired by a member of the PSC’s Aboriginal Workforce Development team.
