Tips for applying

  • Check the minimum eligibility requirements for the Program. These are listed on the who should apply page.
  • Find out more about our participating agencies and read up on the program before you apply. This will help you to select your work placement preferences - we will do our best to accommodate your preferences but there is no guarantee.
  • Start your online application early as applications cannot be submitted after the closing date and time.
  • Prepare any substantial text responses in a word document and then copy and paste them into the online application form to avoid being timed out.
  • Provide an email address and phone number that you access regularly, and will retain access to, e.g. a personal account.
  • Take your time with your application and double check your responses before you submit.
  • To find out more about what capabilities and behaviours are expected, review the role description.
  • Check your junk/spam folder regularly after applying.
  • And last but not least ... good luck!!
  • Please complete all fields - you will not need to attach a resume.
  • In the application form you will be asked about:
    • your agency preferences as there are a number of participating agencies
    • your work history, paid and/or unpaid;
    • professional memberships and certifications;
    • educational qualifications
    • your academic average
    • your motivation for applying to this program
    • an example of when you had to be self motivated
    • your referees (we will let you know before we contact them).
  • We will also ask if you require an adjustment to make the assessment process more accessible. Your answer will not affect whether you progress in the recruitment process or whether you are successful for a graduate role. We are asking so we can make sure the assessment process gives you a fair opportunity to be your best self.
  • If you run into any technical difficulties with your online application, contact the I work for NSW Support team at or 1800 562 679.

If you meet the eligibility requirements, we will invite you to complete an online ability assessment, which assesses problem solving and logical reasoning ability. It will take 40 minutes to complete.

Remember to check your email inbox regularly (including junk/spam folders) as this assessment must be completed by specified deadline.

  • This is your chance to show us who you are and put your best foot forward.
    Activities at the assessment day will assess your capabilities in a range of contexts and may include:
    • Group activity
    • Written work task
    • Behavioural interview
    • Psychometric test verification
  • If you asked for an adjustment to the assessment process, we will be in touch before the day to discuss your requirements.
  • Before the assessment day you will be asked to complete an online personality questionnaire. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Don't worry, this is not a test with right or wrong answers - it helps us understand how you prefer to work.
  • If you have any questions about the Program, this is a great place to ask!
  • If you are successful at the assessment day we will contact you to check that the referees listed in your application are still current.
  • If the referee reports are satisfactory, we will make you an offer.
  • Your offer will be subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks (citizen, qualification and criminal history)
  • Your assessment results will be provided to your employer to support your development.
  • Now for the exciting part - the start of your new career in NSW government!!
